As contemporary smart homes go, Highbury stands out as a definitive example of how intelligent technology can be tastefully integrated into a family residence.

A detached six-bedroom home situated on a quiet residential North London avenue, the property has been purposefully designed to maximise the amount of natural illumination available, with light wells, floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors leading from the ground floor to a large outdoor space at the rear of the residence. Intelligent lighting solutions and motorised shade provision feature prominently in the design, playing an important role in managing the property’s interior environment.

The creative layout results in some stunning shading configurations, including a trio of independently-managed skylight blinds in the kitchen/dining area and a single 5.8m long Lutron blind that provides shade for the entire staircase and upper landings.

Throughout the property, control interfaces are kept as subtle as possible so that they can fit with the sleek, modern interior design. Engraved Lutron keypads have been flush-mounted using Andrew Lucas’ proprietary solution and configured so the whole family can effortlessly understand and manage all of the lighting and shading scenes in the part of the home they’re in. So as to remain sensitive to the property’s design, each keypad faceplate was selected specifically to either match or complement the room they reside in. Additionally, touchscreen panels have been flush-mounted in key locations to offer intuitive whole-house control through a personalised Crestron interface, meaning occupants have no need to take their phones out of their pockets every time they want to alter the ambience.

Multi-room audio and video runs throughout the property, with several in-ceiling or plaster-in speakers located in communal spaces, as well as custom-built speakers in the pool/spa area of the property. In the garden, several waterproof speakers from Bowers & Wilkins create the perfect outdoor hosting space, while the sauna and steam room feature a weatherproof speaker and an in-ceiling speaker respectively to extend audio provision to these areas. The homeowners already owned a pair of premium Meridian DSP8000 loudspeakers, and were keen to enjoy their extensive record collection through them. Andrew Lucas provided a high-end acrylic hi-fi turntable to create the perfect lossless listening experience.

Multiple 4K HDR screens from 40” to 65” are present in the property, with video sources ranging from satellite and Apple TV to several streaming options. In several instances, Andrew Lucas London worked with high-end construction company New Wave London to ensure that these units (and any associated speakers) would fit exactly into the custom-made joinery that proliferates throughout the residence.

The property’s masterpiece is deservedly the stunning home cinema room with 106” screen and 4K HDR projection system, conceived and executed by the Andrew Lucas team.

This space benefited from the work of in-house acoustician Andreas Brusberg, known for his design of the Fryderyk Chopin Institution’s concert-grade audio system. He led the design, build and acoustic treatment of a bespoke room-wide 3D audio speaker system, including a central speaker array behind the acoustically-transparent cinema screen and 32 sub-woofer drivers situated beneath the second row of seating.

As with many premium home installations, security was an important part of the design. Several IP66-rated cameras are situated around the property’s exterior to let the occupants check for intruders, while a Doorbird entry system with custom faceplate makes it simple to see and speak to guests outside via a touchscreen or mobile app and also operate the front gate remotely.

In our client’s words:

As a complex, highly technical project, it was incredibly useful to have a company of Andrew Lucas London’s stature and experience on board. Their smart home design was entirely sensitive to what we were looking to achieve with the property and the technology solutions they installed fit in seamlessly with the design and construction of our home.

On-site, the Andrew Lucas team was incredibly competent and professional. They were always willing to go the extra mile to overcome any challenges that arose during the installation of the various systems in the home.

Their attention to detail was highly impressive, particularly in the cinema room, where every single element – from the speakers to the custom joinery – works together perfectly to create a room that is truly wonderful to spend time in. Like the rest of the house, it is incredibly easy to use, which is exactly what we were hoping for from a smart home system.

I would suggest that other homeowners looking to make their properties smarter engage with Andrew Lucas – the quality of service they have provided from start to finish has been amazing.
